A few weeks ago, over dinner, a friend of ours mentioned her struggles to find hours as a substitute teacher in Ottawa. This led her to volunteer in public schools in the area, giving teens in grades 7 and 8 individual help as necessary. Although the work is fulfilling, it has also brought her to the shocking realization that many of these students can’t read. It’s not that they don’t want to read, it’s that they don’t know how to or have extremely poor reading skills, way below where they should be at their age and grade level. As she spoke I was reminded of this TED talk with Dave Eggers and the value of individual tutoring for students. I care deeply about literacy and providing people with the ability to read and excel academically. This is a great thing.
