The End of Polio: Billions Pledged in Support

Thursday was a really good day.

On the second day of the Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi the UK announced that it will give £300 million over six years to support polio eradication efforts. Canada pledged $250 million over six years. The Gates Foundation pledged $1.8 billion, which is 1/3 of the estimated $5.5 billion necessary to carry out the end game strategy and completely eradicate polio.

In total, $4 billion was pledged towards ending polio, which leaves 30% of the required funding left to raise. There is a massive sense of optimism that other major countries such as Australia will shortly follow with further funding.

This is an exciting moment! Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to sign the petition and offer your support. The fight to end polio isn’t over, but we’re definitely charging full steam ahead. If you’d like to get behind this exciting movement, please tweet your thanks to @DFID_UK or @CIDA_CA. And if you haven’t already signed the petition do it now and be a part of this historic moment!
